Parvana’s Journey” by Deborah Ellis is an incredibly beautiful book. The way the author weaves together emotions, relationships, and the rich cultural backdrop is truly mesmerizing. The book “Parvana’s Journey” was published in 2002. Deborah Ellis was born August 7, 1960, and is an excellent Canadian fiction writer and an activist, known for her thought-provoking works like “Mud City” and “The Breadwinner,” she once again delivers a captivating story in this book.
“Parvana’s Journey” introduces a cast of memorable characters, including Parvana, Asif, Hassan, and Leila, among others. Each character’s performance is executed exceptionally, drawing the reader deeper into their lives and struggles. Every next chapter has a twist with a new main character of the chapter.
The book revolves around the fictional story of an eponymous twelve-year-old girl, who disguised as a boy, leaves Kabul in search of her missing mother and siblings in Taliban-era Afghanistan. Settings off to search for her family, she bands along with other displaced children in the war.
One of my favorite moments in the book is the poignant departure scene, as Parvana meets Asif, a one-legged boy who’s fled his abusive uncle. Asif was unbearably arrogant and rude to Parvana. However, he adores the baby (whom Parvana named Hassan), and unhesitatingly, Parvana takes him with her. It is a moment that truly showcases the depth of Parvana’s character and captivates those who appreciate her performance.
While “Parvana’s Journey” successfully engages readers, prompting introspection and a connection with the characters, it does have its ups and downs. Occasionally, after moments of great interest, the narrative experiences lulls that may disappoint some readers. Nonetheless, the overall impact of the book is undeniably powerful.
As someone, who typically enjoys short stories, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and beauty of Deborah Ellis’s storytelling. Since delving into this book, I have become a devoted fan of her work. I highly recommend “Parvana’s Journey” to anyone who appreciates fictional literature and to those students looking to enhance their reading skills. It is a compelling journey that will leave a lasting impression.
