To begin with, it is essential to know the background. It started on a cold December day, 24, in 1955, in Karachi. He opened his eyes to the world. The people of Balochistan could hardly have imagined that God had gifted them with an optimistic, precious, naturalistic, and revolutionary poet. It was the talk of those days when a boy came into existence in the house of Waja Amanullah.
Additionally, his grandfather, Waja Qazi Abdul Rahim Sabir, was a writer and philosopher of his era. Moreover, he completed his matriculation and intermediate education in Pasni and later pursued higher education. In 1972, he went to Karachi and was admitted to SM Science College. A few days later, due to personal issues, he stopped his educational journey and returned to Pasni to take care of his father’s business. After that, he started working as a contractor.
Later on, he returned to Karachi. He achieved his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Urdu Arts College in 1983 and went to Quetta, Balochistan, to earn his Master of Arts degree in International Relations (IR) from the University of Balochistan in 1986. During his student period, he was heavily socialized. He attended numerous functions and meetings of Balochi literature, where poets and authors recited their poetry. From there, a poet and a writer emerged. Now, in this era, we know him as a revolutionary writer, and through his resistance and nationalistic poems. While he was the pioneer of Muneer Momin, and through his poetry, many singers gained fame; one example is the late Noor Khan Bizanjo.
Even though he himself didn’t know that he would become a renowned personality of all time in Balochistan, after completing his education, he traveled to Pasni. He established an organization known as the Balochi Labzanki Shingkari Majlis Pasni. Later on, he changed its name and is now known as Izm Azman. Yes, you got it, well praised, well-known, popular icon and pride of Balochistan, Waja Mubarik Qazi. He was the one whose poetry revolutionized the thoughts of many; he was the one whose verses shaped the thoughts of many, and was understood by every segment of society. By rhythm and melody, he designed the language to have a persuasive effect.
However, he had faced a great deal during his journey to enrich Balochi literature. He became selfless by observing the grievances and sorrows of the ordinary people within the realm of the Baloch nation. Qazi sab was, no doubt, inspired by Waja Sayad Zahoor Shah Hashmi and Mirza Asadullah Ghalib. Waja Qazi began his poetic journey after his marriage in 1976 or 1977. Sea shores were the initial spots to write the poetry; he would often gaze up the stars and the sky while in the process. Essentially, he was an introvert; every verse of his is written in the state of introversion.
He writes:
In another place, he writes:
Furthermore, he altered the shape of Balochi poetry, writing it in a thought-provoking yet straightforward manner, and his poetry was recognized by every segment of the Baloch nation, even without being read. He always raised his voice against the oppression and injustice. He advocated for the rights of the Baloch people and also wrote about the inhumane instances of government. He was a well-wisher of the Baloch nation. He chose a life in which he had not found peace. He was also a political activist during his time as a student. He was detained during the rule of General Zia for protesting against the death sentence of Shaheed Hameed Baloch. He was a captive in the Much jail in 1982.
After many challenges and ups and downs, he left the realm of practical politics. He chose the pen, using his words to denounce the government’s harsh and rude actions. Later, one joined Pasni Fish Harbor and retired as its director of finance.
His contributions to the Balochi literature deserve a more profound appreciation and praise. He was proficient in Balochi languages, including Balochi, Urdu, Punjabi, Farsi, Arabic, and English.
His works:
He wrote more than ten books, including:
- Zarnawisht, 1990
- Shakkalen Jawrani Barward
- Hani Mani Maten Watan
- Ap Sammaka Jatag
- Ges a water kanag Lota
Some of his Balochi poetries about oppression on Baloch society:
Even he wrote in Urdu:
اب کہ ہوا چلی ہوا بھی ساتھ لے گئی۔
میں دھوپ سے گریز پا کوئی سایہ نہ شجر ہے
وہ خود تو خواب بن چکی مگر دیدہ بھی ساتھ لے گئ
Hence, he anticipated his departure in a literary letter written to Qutb Ul Ghiz Mir Sagar in the same week. He wrote, “I am now very weak, even though I cannot feel hungry, and I also can’t get out of bed.”
Ultimately, in his final days, he was not in good health due to illness; he was a guest of Babu Alam in Singan-e-Sar, Turbat. He left the entire nation in long-lasting sorrows, and the echo of his departure left Balochistan in clamoring sobs. Unfortunately, Balochistan lost a pen and a mind forever, and an empathetic voice became silent eternally, leaving a lasting impact. He left an everlasting legacy behind and marked a sign that can’t be replaced by anyone until the resurrection day. He passed away at night on 15 September 2023. God may make his aftermath life easy. Rest in Glory Qazi.
